About fertility testing
If you've been trying to conceive for over 12 months (or 6 months if you're over 35), a fertility workup is the next step. Female factor and male factor each account for about 30% of cases; the rest are mixed or unexplained.
For women: Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) measures ovarian reserve — how many eggs are still in the ovaries. It's the single best marker for fertility potential and IVF planning. Day 2/3 FSH and LH show whether ovulation is happening and confirm the ovarian reserve picture. Estradiol, prolactin and TSH rule out hormonal causes of cycle irregularity. AMH and FSH are also part of pre-IVF planning.
For men: Semen analysis is the foundational test — count, motility, morphology and volume. A single abnormal result needs a repeat in 4–6 weeks; sperm parameters vary widely. Testosterone is the main hormonal test if semen analysis is abnormal.
