Monograph
Injection
Used to relieve fluid retention (edema) due to heart failure, liver disease or kidney disease; may be used for acute pulmonary edema and as an adjunct in hypertension when rapid diuresis is needed.
Furosemide is a loop diuretic. It blocks the Na+-K+-2Cl− cotransporter in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, increasing excretion of sodium, chloride and water. This reduces fluid overload and lowers blood pressure/preload.
Intravenous injection/infusion to be given by a healthcare professional only. Dose and rate depend on the condition and response; monitor urine output, blood pressure and electrolytes during therapy.
Dehydration, dizziness, low blood pressure, increased urination, electrolyte imbalance (low potassium/low sodium/low magnesium), nausea, headache, increased blood urea/creatinine, hyperuricemia
Use with caution in kidney or liver impairment, diabetes, gout, electrolyte disturbances, dehydration, low blood pressure, elderly patients. Can cause significant fluid and electrolyte loss; regular monitoring of BP, renal function and electrolytes is required. Risk of ototoxicity with high doses/rapid IV administration or with other ototoxic drugs. Not for self-administration.
Aminoglycosides (ototoxicity), digoxin (arrhythmias with hypokalemia), lithium (increased lithium levels/toxicity), NSAIDs (reduced diuretic effect/renal risk), ACE inhibitors/ARBs and other antihypertensives (excess hypotension), corticosteroids/amphotericin B (hypokalemia), other diuretics (electrolyte loss)
