Uses & Benefits
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as ear, nose & throat infections (otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis/pharyngitis), lower respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and dental infections.
How It Works
Amoxicillin is a penicillin-class (beta-lactam) antibiotic. It kills susceptible bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis. It is ineffective against viral infections like common cold/flu.
Directions for Use
Oral dry syrup/suspension: reconstitute with boiled and cooled water up to the mark, shake well. Measure dose with a calibrated spoon/syringe; give at evenly spaced intervals as prescribed, with or without food (with food if stomach upset). Shake well before each dose; complete the full course.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rash, urticaria, headache, oral/vaginal candidiasis
Warnings & Precautions
Schedule H: use only on prescription. Do not use in patients with allergy to penicillins/cephalosporins; stop and seek care if rash, swelling, breathing difficulty or severe allergy occurs. Use with caution in history of allergy/asthma, kidney disease (dose adjustment may be needed), and infectious mononucleosis (higher risk of rash). Prolonged use may cause superinfection; seek medical help for severe/persistent diarrhea (possible C. difficile).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (may increase INR/bleeding risk), methotrexate (reduced clearance/toxicity risk), probenecid (increases amoxicillin levels), allopurinol (increased risk of rash), oral typhoid vaccine (reduced effect).
Storage Instructions
Store dry powder below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture. After reconstitution, store as directed on label (commonly refrigerated 2–8°C or below 25°C) and use within the specified period; do not freeze. Keep tightly closed and out of reach of children.
Substitutes
Amoxyclav 125 mg/5 mL Dry Syrup, Novamox 125 Dry Syrup, Almox 125 Dry Syrup, Mox Kid 125 Dry Syrup, Amoxicillin 125 mg/5 mL Dry Syrup (generic)
