Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise; helps control post-meal (postprandial) blood glucose spikes.
Acarbose is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor that delays the breakdown of complex carbohydrates in the intestine. This slows glucose absorption and reduces postprandial blood sugar rise.
Take by mouth with the first bite of each main meal (or immediately before meals) as prescribed. Follow diabetic diet and exercise; if a meal is skipped, skip the dose. Swallow tablet with water.
Flatulence, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, bloating, nausea
Use with caution in liver disease; periodic liver function monitoring may be advised. Not recommended in inflammatory bowel disease, colonic ulceration, intestinal obstruction or conditions that may worsen with increased gas. Risk of hypoglycaemia increases when used with insulin or sulfonylureas—treat low sugar with glucose (dextrose), not sucrose. Consult doctor in pregnancy/breastfeeding. Stop and seek care if severe abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, or signs of liver injury (yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine) occur.
Insulin and sulfonylureas (increased hypoglycaemia risk), digoxin (may reduce levels), intestinal adsorbents/enzymes like activated charcoal or amylase/pancreatin (reduce effect), corticosteroids/diuretics/thyroid hormones (may alter glycaemic control)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
