Management of anxiety disorders, panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia)

Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the action of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This reduces excessive neuronal activity, producing anxiolytic and calming effects.

Oral tablet (SR/ER). Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily, swallowed whole with water; do not crush, chew, or split. Can be taken with or without food; take at the same time each day. Do not stop suddenly—dose should be tapered by a doctor.

Drowsiness, dizziness, sedation, fatigue, impaired coordination, headache, blurred vision, dry mouth, nausea, constipation, memory/concentration problems

Prescription-only benzodiazepine. Risk of dependence, misuse and withdrawal (including seizures) especially with prolonged use or high doses; use for shortest duration as advised. May cause marked drowsiness—avoid driving/operating machinery. Use caution in elderly (falls/confusion), liver disease, respiratory disease (COPD/sleep apnea), depression/suicidal risk. Do not stop abruptly. Concomitant use with opioids or other CNS depressants can cause profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma or death.

Alcohol and other CNS depressants (opioids, sedating antihistamines, antipsychotics) increase sedation/respiratory depression; CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin/erythromycin, ritonavir/cobicistat, grapefruit juice) increase alprazolam levels; CYP3A4 inducers (carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin, St John’s wort) may reduce effect; valproate and some antidepressants may increase sedation

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
