Prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in non-valvular atrial fibrillation, Treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), Prevention of recurrent DVT/PE, Prevention of venous thromboembolism after hip or knee replacement surgery
Apixaban is an oral anticoagulant that selectively and reversibly inhibits Factor Xa. This reduces thrombin generation and prevents formation and growth of blood clots.
Take by mouth as prescribed, usually twice daily; can be taken with or without food. Swallow tablet with water at the same times each day; do not stop or change dose without medical advice. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered on the same day and continue the regular schedule (do not double the dose).
Bleeding, easy bruising, nosebleed, gum bleeding, nausea, anemia
Risk of serious and potentially fatal bleeding; seek urgent care for unusual bleeding, black stools, blood in urine, coughing/vomiting blood, severe headache or weakness. Do not discontinue abruptly without doctor advice (increases risk of stroke/clots). Use with caution in kidney or liver impairment, elderly, low body weight, and in patients with bleeding disorders. Inform doctor/dentist before surgery or dental procedures; may need temporary stoppage. Not recommended in active pathological bleeding; caution with spinal/epidural anesthesia due to risk of hematoma.
Other anticoagulants/antiplatelets (warfarin, heparin, aspirin, clopidogrel), NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac), SSRIs/SNRIs (sertraline, fluoxetine, venlafaxine), strong CYP3A4/P-gp inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, clarithromycin), strong CYP3A4/P-gp inducers (rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, St John’s wort)
