Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of high cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia) and mixed dyslipidaemia; lowering LDL-C and triglycerides and raising HDL-C; prevention of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in at-risk patients along with diet and lifestyle changes.
Rosuvastatin is a statin that inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the key enzyme for cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This increases hepatic LDL receptor activity, enhancing clearance of LDL cholesterol from the blood and lowering overall atherogenic lipids.
Tablet for oral use. Take once daily at the same time each day, with or without food, as prescribed by the doctor. Continue diet/exercise; do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, dizziness, muscle pain (myalgia), weakness, increased liver enzymes
Risk of muscle problems (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis) especially with high doses, kidney impairment, hypothyroidism, elderly, or interacting drugs—seek care for unexplained muscle pain/weakness or dark urine. Liver: use caution in liver disease; monitor liver enzymes if clinically indicated; avoid in active liver disease. Kidney: dose adjustment may be required in severe renal impairment. Diabetes: may slightly increase blood sugar in some patients. Stop and consult doctor if pregnancy occurs; avoid breastfeeding.
Cyclosporine (avoid/major increase in rosuvastatin levels), gemfibrozil and other fibrates (increased myopathy risk), niacin (myopathy risk), protease inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir-containing regimens; increased levels), warfarin and other coumarin anticoagulants (may increase INR), ezetimibe (additive muscle effects), antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (reduce absorption; separate dosing), colchicine (myopathy risk)
