How It Works
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It blocks the AT1 receptor, causing relaxation of blood vessels and reduced aldosterone effects, which lowers blood pressure and reduces strain on the heart.
Directions for Use
Take orally as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food; swallow tablet with water. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Not recommended in pregnancy (can harm the unborn baby); avoid use in patients with severe liver impairment or biliary obstructive disorders. Use caution in kidney disease, dehydration/volume depletion, low blood pressure, and hyperkalemia risk; monitor blood pressure, kidney function and serum potassium. Seek medical help for fainting, severe dizziness, swelling of face/lips (angioedema) or markedly reduced urination.
Drug Interactions
Potassium supplements/potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, amiloride), ACE inhibitors or aliskiren (higher risk of kidney injury/hyperkalemia; avoid especially in diabetes), NSAIDs (may reduce effect and worsen kidney function), lithium (increased lithium toxicity), diuretics (additive hypotension), other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering).
