Monograph
Telmisartan (40mg)
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); reduction of cardiovascular risk (heart attack/stroke) in high-risk patients when appropriate.
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It relaxes and widens blood vessels by blocking angiotensin II at AT1 receptors, thereby lowering blood pressure and reducing strain on the heart.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow with water; continue regularly even if you feel well.
Dizziness, headache, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, back pain, low blood pressure
Avoid use in pregnancy (can harm the unborn baby). Use caution in kidney disease, liver impairment, dehydration/low salt states, and in elderly due to risk of hypotension. Monitor blood pressure, kidney function and serum potassium, especially after dose changes. Do not use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes; caution in renal artery stenosis. Seek help if swelling of face/lips (angioedema) occurs.
Potassium supplements/potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone) and salt substitutes (risk of hyperkalemia), NSAIDs (may reduce effect and worsen kidney function), lithium (increased lithium levels/toxicity), other antihypertensives/diuretics (additive hypotension), ACE inhibitors or aliskiren (increased risk of kidney issues/hyperkalemia)
