High cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia), mixed dyslipidaemia, prevention of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in at-risk patients along with diet and lifestyle changes
Atorvastatin is an HMG‑CoA reductase inhibitor (statin). It reduces cholesterol synthesis in the liver, lowers LDL and triglycerides, and can modestly increase HDL, thereby reducing cardiovascular risk.
Tablet for oral use. Take once daily at the same time each day, with or without food, as prescribed. Continue cholesterol-lowering diet and exercise; do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, muscle pain (myalgia), joint pain, increased liver enzymes
Prescription medicine. Not recommended in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes. Risk of muscle injury (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis) increases with higher doses and interacting drugs—seek medical help for unexplained muscle pain/weakness, fever, or dark urine. Use with caution in heavy alcohol use, hypothyroidism, kidney problems, and elderly patients. Periodic lipid profile and liver function monitoring may be advised.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, HIV protease inhibitors), cyclosporine, fibrates (gemfibrozil, fenofibrate), niacin, colchicine, warfarin (monitor INR), digoxin, large amounts of grapefruit juice, other lipid-lowering agents—may increase side effects or alter levels
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.
