An Iron Profile is a group of blood tests — serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin saturation and ferritin — that together assess your body's iron stores and how iron is carried in the blood. It is one of the most useful panels for finding the cause of anaemia.

Clinical significance
Low ferritin and transferrin saturation with a high TIBC point to iron-deficiency anaemia, the commonest nutritional deficiency in India. High iron or ferritin can suggest iron overload, infection or inflammation. Results are read together with a CBC and your symptoms by your doctor.

What is the Iron Profile Test?
An Iron Profile is a group of blood tests — serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin saturation and ferritin — that together assess your body's iron stores and how iron is carried in the blood. It is one of the most useful panels for finding the cause of anaemia.
What conditions does the Iron Profile Test detect?
The Iron Profile Test helps detect and monitor conditions including Iron-deficiency anaemia, Iron overload (haemochromatosis), Anaemia of chronic disease.
How should I prepare for the Iron Profile Test?
Morning fasting sample preferred
What is the normal range for the Iron Profile Test?
Serum iron (adult): 60-170 µg/dL
TIBC: 240-450 µg/dL
Transferrin saturation: 20-50%
Ferritin (men): 30-400 ng/mL
Ferritin (women): 15-150 ng/mL Note: reference ranges may vary by laboratory and should be interpreted by your doctor in the context of your overall health.
How much does the Iron Profile Test cost?
The Iron Profile Test is available at ₹649 (MRP ₹1199) on PingMeDoc with free home sample collection. Prices are inclusive of sample collection charges.
Do I need to fast for an iron profile test?
A morning fasting sample (8-10 hours) is preferred because iron levels vary through the day and after meals. Water is allowed.
Should I stop iron tablets before the test?
Iron supplements can falsely raise serum iron. Unless your doctor says otherwise, avoid them for 24-48 hours before the sample.
What is the difference between ferritin and an iron profile?
Ferritin measures stored iron and is part of the iron profile. The full profile adds serum iron, TIBC and transferrin saturation for a complete picture.
Can the iron profile diagnose anaemia on its own?
It identifies iron-related causes of anaemia. Your doctor reads it together with a CBC to confirm the type and cause.
Does the Iron Profile Test test require fasting?
Yes. You must fast for 8 hours before the Iron Profile Test test. You may drink water during the fasting period. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
