What is the Blood Group Test?

A blood group test finds your ABO group (A, B, AB or O) and your Rh factor (Rh positive or Rh negative) from a small blood sample. It matters for blood transfusion, pregnancy care and surgery, and once it is known accurately it stays the same for life.

What your Blood Group Test result means

Rh positive (for example O positive)
Red cells carry the Rh D antigen. This is the more common result. A pregnant woman who is Rh positive does not need Rh antibody follow-up for this reason.
Rh negative (for example B negative)
Red cells lack the Rh D antigen. Rh negative blood needs Rh negative donors for transfusion. In pregnancy, an Rh negative mother carrying an Rh positive baby can make Rh antibodies, so her doctor plans extra monitoring.
Weak D or unclear result
Some people have a weakened form of the Rh D antigen, which may need further testing at a blood bank. A doctor or blood bank decides how to treat the result.

How can I check my blood group online?
A blood group is confirmed by a laboratory test on a blood sample, so a report from a lab is the reliable record. A home card test or a guess from family members is not accepted by hospitals for transfusion.
What does the Rh factor in a blood test mean?
Rh factor is a protein, called the D antigen, on red cells. If you have it you are Rh positive, and if you do not you are Rh negative. It is reported together with your ABO group, such as A positive or O negative.
Does my blood group change over time?
No. Your ABO group and Rh type stay the same through life. Rare exceptions include a bone marrow transplant or some blood cancers, which a doctor would explain.
Why is Rh factor tested in pregnancy?
If the mother is Rh negative and the baby is Rh positive, the mother's body can form antibodies that affect later pregnancies. Testing early lets the doctor plan monitoring, and a titre test can be added if needed.
Do I need to fast before a blood group test?
No. A blood group test needs no fasting or other preparation. A small sample is taken from a vein in the arm.
