What is the Coagulation Profile Test?

A coagulation profile is a set of blood tests that shows how well your blood clots. It usually includes PT with INR and aPTT, and sometimes fibrinogen and thrombin time. Doctors order it before surgery, for unexplained bleeding or bruising, and to monitor blood thinners.

Clotting times depend on the reagent and the analyser, so each lab sets its own range and the aPTT range in particular varies between labs. Use the range printed on your report. A warfarin target is set by your doctor for your condition.

What your Coagulation Profile Test result means

Prolonged PT or raised INR

Blood is taking longer to clot. Common reasons are warfarin treatment, liver disease and vitamin K deficiency. A doctor decides what it means in your case.

Prolonged aPTT

Can go with heparin treatment, a deficiency of a clotting factor such as in haemophilia, or some antibodies. The doctor may repeat or add tests to find the cause.

Low fibrinogen

Fibrinogen is used up or made less in conditions such as severe liver disease or widespread clotting problems. It is interpreted with the other results.

All within range

The main clotting pathways are working in this test. Some bleeding disorders, such as certain platelet or von Willebrand disorders, can still have a normal profile.

One result is not a diagnosis. A doctor reads it with your symptoms, history, medicines and other tests.
