What is the PO4 Test?
The PO4 test measures phosphate (phosphorus) in your blood. PO4 is the chemical formula of phosphate. Phosphorus works with calcium to build bones and teeth and helps cells make energy, and the kidneys keep its level steady.
PO4 Test normal range
| Measurement | Typical adult value |
|---|---|
| Adults | 2.5–4.5 mg/dL |
Children have higher values than adults, and levels are a little lower after meals and higher in the morning fasting state in some people. Methods differ between labs, so go by the range on your report.
Ranges differ between laboratories and methods. The reference range printed on your own report is the one to read your result against.
What your PO4 Test result means
- High
- Most often kidney disease, because the kidneys stop clearing phosphate. Low parathyroid hormone, excess vitamin D, and cell breakdown can also raise it. Over time a high level harms bones and blood vessels.
- Low
- Can come from vitamin D deficiency, an overactive parathyroid, poor diet or absorption, alcohol excess, or from some antacids. Very low levels cause muscle weakness and tiredness.
One result is not a diagnosis. A doctor reads it with your symptoms, history, medicines and other tests.
Why is the PO4 Test done?
- Kidney disease, where phosphorus tends to rise
- Checking calcium and parathyroid problems, usually with calcium and PTH
- Bone pain, weak bones or rickets and osteomalacia
- Monitoring people on dialysis, or on phosphate binders or supplements
