Relief of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma and COPD (including chronic bronchitis and emphysema); wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness due to reversible airway obstruction
How It Works
Salbutamol is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist (SABA). It relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, leading to bronchodilation and improved airflow, providing quick relief from wheeze and breathlessness.
Directions for Use
Oral syrup; use only as prescribed by a doctor. Measure with a calibrated spoon/cup. Can be taken with or without food; if it upsets the stomach, take after food. Do not exceed the prescribed dose or frequency.
Schedule H: use on prescription only. Use with caution in heart disease, arrhythmias, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and seizure disorders. Overuse may worsen asthma control and increase risk of serious side effects; seek medical help if relief is inadequate or symptoms worsen. May cause low potassium (hypokalaemia), especially with high doses or when used with diuretics/steroids. Use cautiously in pregnancy and breastfeeding; consult doctor.
Drug Interactions
Non-selective beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol) may reduce effect and cause bronchospasm; other sympathomimetics may increase side effects; diuretics, corticosteroids and xanthines (theophylline) may increase risk of hypokalaemia; MAO inhibitors/TCAs may potentiate cardiovascular effects; digoxin levels may decrease with hypokalaemia risk
