Type 2 diabetes mellitus (as an add-on to diet and exercise), especially for controlling post-meal (postprandial) blood glucose
Voglibose is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor that delays the breakdown and absorption of carbohydrates in the intestine. This reduces the rise in blood glucose levels after meals.
Oral tablet. Usually taken just before meals (or with the first bite of food) as prescribed by the doctor. Follow diet and exercise advice; do not skip meals once taken.
Flatulence, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, bloating, nausea
Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Use with caution in liver disease; monitor blood glucose and liver enzymes as advised. Avoid in inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction, or chronic intestinal diseases causing malabsorption. Risk of hypoglycaemia increases when used with insulin or sulfonylureas—treat low sugar with glucose (dextrose) rather than sucrose. Stop and seek care if severe abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, jaundice, or allergic reactions occur.
Insulin and sulfonylureas (increased hypoglycaemia risk), other antidiabetics, digestive enzyme preparations/amylase, intestinal adsorbents (may reduce effect), corticosteroids and thiazide diuretics (may increase glucose), alcohol (may affect glycaemic control)
