Estimated average glucose uses the ADA formula (28.7 × HbA1c − 46.7). Anaemia, recent blood loss or transfusion, pregnancy, kidney disease and some haemoglobin variants can make HbA1c read falsely high or low. Diagnosis and treatment are a doctor's decision.
Need help understanding your result?
A doctor can discuss your symptoms and help you decide what to do next.
Below 5.7% is normal. 5.7% to 6.4% is prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher on two tests is diabetes (American Diabetes Association cut-offs, also used in India).
What average blood sugar does HbA1c 7 mean?
An HbA1c of 7% stands for an average blood sugar of about 154 mg/dL (8.6 mmol/L) over the last 2 to 3 months. 8% is about 183 mg/dL and 9% about 212 mg/dL.
How is HbA1c converted to average blood sugar?
With the ADA formula: estimated average glucose (mg/dL) = 28.7 × HbA1c − 46.7. Divide by 18 for mmol/L. Lab reports that print eAG use the same formula.
Why does my HbA1c not match my glucose meter?
A meter shows the sugar at the moment of the prick; HbA1c reflects the whole 2 to 3 months, weighted towards the last month. Anaemia, iron deficiency, kidney disease, pregnancy and some haemoglobin variants also shift HbA1c.
Do I need to fast for an HbA1c test?
No. HbA1c can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. A fasting blood sugar booked with it does need 8 to 10 hours of fasting.
How often should HbA1c be checked?
Every 3 months while diabetes treatment is being adjusted, every 6 months once it is stable, and once a year for prediabetes or for adults over 30 with risk factors.
