Kidney failure
eGFR is an estimate. It reads wrong in pregnancy, at extremes of muscle mass (body builders, amputees, very thin or bed-bound people), after a large meat meal, with creatine supplements and when kidney function is changing quickly. Not for children. Treatment and medicine doses are a doctor's decision.
Need help understanding your result?
A doctor can discuss your symptoms and help you decide what to do next.
90 or above is normal. 60 to 89 is mildly reduced and common with age; it counts as kidney disease only with another sign such as protein in the urine. Below 60 for 3 months or more is chronic kidney disease.
How is eGFR calculated?
From serum creatinine, age and sex using the CKD-EPI 2021 equation, the race-free formula recommended by KDIGO. It estimates filtration per 1.73 m² of body surface.
What creatinine level is normal?
Roughly 0.7 to 1.3 mg/dL in men and 0.6 to 1.1 mg/dL in women, but creatinine depends on muscle mass, which is why eGFR is a better guide than creatinine alone.
Can eGFR improve?
A low eGFR from dehydration, a recent infection or some medicines often recovers once the cause is treated. In chronic kidney disease, controlling blood pressure and sugar slows the decline.
How do I convert creatinine from µmol/L to mg/dL?
Divide µmol/L by 88.4. For example, 97 µmol/L is 1.1 mg/dL. This calculator does the conversion when µmol/L is selected.
Which test do I need for eGFR?
A serum creatinine or a kidney function test (urea, creatinine, uric acid and electrolytes). Most Indian labs print the eGFR on the report.
