Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This reduces excessive neuronal activity, producing anxiolytic and calming effects.
Oral sustained-release tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time. Swallow whole; do not crush, break, or chew. Can be taken with or without food; avoid sudden discontinuation—dose should be tapered by a doctor.

Prescription-only benzodiazepine with risk of dependence, tolerance and withdrawal (may be severe: anxiety, insomnia, seizures) especially with long use/high doses. Avoid driving/operating machinery due to sedation. Use caution in elderly, respiratory disease (COPD/sleep apnea), liver impairment, depression/suicidal risk, history of substance misuse. Do not stop abruptly. Concomitant use with opioids, alcohol or other CNS depressants can cause profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma or death.
