Levesam 500 mg Tablet is a prescription medicine containing Levetiracetam 500 mg (film-coated tablet). It is used for epilepsy, seizure disorders: partial-onset seizures and myoclonic seizures. It belongs to the group of medicines called Anticonvulsant (SV2A ligand).
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually twice daily, with or without food. The dose and how long you take it depend on what you are being treated for and how you respond. Do not take more, or for longer, than your doctor has advised.
The side effects seen most often with Levesam 500 mg Tablet are sleepiness (somnolence), dizziness, fatigue and headache. Most are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. Tell your doctor if one persists or worries you.
Before you start, tell your doctor about any liver, kidney or heart problem, whether you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every other medicine you take, including supplements and ayurvedic preparations. Some of them can change how Levesam 500 mg Tablet works.
Most side effects of Levesam are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:
Stop the medicine and get help at once for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually twice daily, with or without food. Swallow tablet whole with water; do not crush/chew unless advised. Take at the same times daily; do not stop suddenly—taper only under medical supervision.
Levetiracetam is an antiepileptic medicine that binds to synaptic vesicle protein SV2A in the brain. This helps regulate neurotransmitter release and stabilizes abnormal electrical activity, reducing seizure frequency.
May cause drowsiness/dizziness—avoid driving/operating machinery until you know the effect. Do not stop abruptly (risk of increased seizures). Monitor for mood/behavior changes, depression, aggression or suicidal thoughts—seek medical help if present. Use with caution in kidney disease (dose adjustment may be needed); elderly may be more sensitive. Rare severe allergic reactions and skin reactions can occur. Inform doctor if pregnant/planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.
An overdose of this medicine can cause deep unconsciousness, slowed breathing and dangerous heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.
Other CNS depressants (alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids) may increase drowsiness; methotrexate (may reduce clearance/increase levels); probenecid (may increase metabolite levels).
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), in a dry place, protected from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
