A higher-than-normal haemoglobin may be seen with dehydration, smoking, or living at high altitude, and less commonly with a condition that increases red-cell production. A raised red-cell count may be seen with dehydration, chronic low oxygen, smoking, or a bone-marrow condition that increases red-cell production. A high haematocrit may be seen with dehydration or with conditions that raise the red-cell count. These are general associations, not a diagnosis — discuss your report with your doctor.

A low haemoglobin may suggest anaemia — for example from iron, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, blood loss, or a chronic illness. A low red-cell count may suggest anaemia, recent blood loss, or reduced red-cell production. A low haematocrit may suggest anaemia or blood loss. A result outside the reference range should always be interpreted by your doctor in context.
