Why test for irregular periods?
Irregular, infrequent or missed periods are commonly driven by thyroid dysfunction, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or high prolactin. A thyroid test plus LH, FSH and prolactin is a sensible starting panel, often with a blood sugar test as PCOS is linked to insulin resistance.
In women, hormone samples are usually taken on day 2-3 of the cycle. Your gynaecologist interprets the results alongside an ultrasound and your history.
