Monograph
Capsule
Treatment of prostate cancer, especially metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) and metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer, in combination with prednisone/prednisolone as prescribed.
Abiraterone inhibits CYP17 (17α-hydroxylase/C17,20-lyase), a key enzyme in androgen biosynthesis in testes, adrenal glands and tumor tissue. This reduces androgen (testosterone) levels that drive prostate cancer growth. It is usually given with a corticosteroid to reduce mineralocorticoid excess effects.
Take exactly as prescribed by an oncologist. Swallow capsule whole with water at the same time each day. Commonly taken on an empty stomach (do not take with food unless your doctor specifically advises), and is usually prescribed along with prednisone/prednisolone. Do not stop corticosteroid abruptly; follow medical advice.
fluid retention/edema, high blood pressure, low potassium (hypokalemia), liver enzyme elevation, fatigue, hot flushes, joint pain, nausea, diarrhea, headache
Prescription-only anticancer medicine; use under specialist supervision. Can cause severe liver problems—LFT monitoring required and dose interruption may be needed. Risk of hypertension, hypokalemia and fluid retention (mineralocorticoid excess); monitor BP and electrolytes. Avoid in severe hepatic impairment; caution in cardiac disease/heart failure. Do not use in women who are pregnant; men with partners who can become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment and as advised after stopping.
Strong CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, St John’s wort) may reduce effect; CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase levels. Abiraterone can affect drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 (e.g., metoprolol, propranolol, flecainide, antidepressants) and CYP2C8—dose/monitoring may be needed. Use caution with drugs that lower potassium (loop/thiazide diuretics) and with QT-prolonging medicines.
Store below 25°C in a dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
Zytiga 250 mg tablet, Abirapro 250 mg tablet (Glenmark), Abitate 250 mg tablet (Intas), Abiraterone 250 mg tablet (various generics)
