Monograph
Injection
Treatment and prevention of acid-related disorders such as peptic ulcer disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, Zollinger–Ellison syndrome; prophylaxis of stress ulcers and aspiration (acid) pneumonitis in peri-operative settings (as prescribed).
Ranitidine is an H2-receptor antagonist that reduces gastric acid secretion by blocking histamine H2 receptors on gastric parietal cells. This lowers both basal and stimulated acid output, helping relieve symptoms and promote ulcer healing.
For intravenous or intramuscular use only; to be administered by a healthcare professional. Dose and frequency depend on indication and patient factors; may be given as slow IV injection/IV infusion or IM injection. Follow the treating doctor’s instructions; do not self-administer.
Headache, dizziness, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, rash, injection site pain, increased liver enzymes
Prescription-only injectable. Use with caution in renal impairment (dose adjustment may be needed) and in patients with acute porphyria. Rare: hypersensitivity reactions, bradycardia/hypotension with rapid IV administration, blood dyscrasias, hepatic dysfunction. If alarm symptoms (weight loss, recurrent vomiting, GI bleeding) are present, rule out gastric malignancy. Note: Ranitidine products have been subject to regulatory actions/withdrawals in many markets due to NDMA impurity concerns—use only if supplied/approved per current local regulatory guidance and hospital policy.
Warfarin (INR changes reported), procainamide (increased levels), metoprolol (may increase exposure), drugs requiring acidic gastric pH for absorption (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole, atazanavir), sucralfate (may reduce absorption if given together)
Store below 25°C, protect from light, do not freeze. Keep ampoules in original carton until use; use immediately after opening and discard any unused portion.
