Syrup

Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as ear, nose and throat infections (sinusitis, tonsillitis, otitis media), lower respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and dental infections.

Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from bacterial enzymes, extending its spectrum against resistant organisms.

Oral suspension/syrup: take exactly as prescribed. Usually given with food to reduce stomach upset. Shake well before use, measure with a dosing syringe/cup, and complete the full course even if you feel better. Follow label instructions for reconstitution if supplied as dry syrup.

Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, rash, urticaria, headache, oral thrush, vaginal yeast infection

Prescription antibiotic—use only for bacterial infections. Do not use if allergic to penicillins/cephalosporins or if there was prior amoxicillin-clavulanate–associated jaundice/hepatitis. Use with caution in liver disease, kidney impairment (dose adjustment may be needed), history of severe allergy/asthma. Stop and seek medical help for severe rash, breathing difficulty, or persistent/watery/bloody diarrhoea. Prolonged use may cause superinfection.

Warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk/INR), methotrexate (increased toxicity), allopurinol (increased rash risk), probenecid (increases amoxicillin levels), mycophenolate mofetil (reduced levels), oral contraceptives (possible reduced efficacy—use backup if advised)

Store as per pack label. If reconstituted, keep tightly closed; commonly stored refrigerated (2–8°C) and used within 7–10 days; do not freeze. Protect from heat, light and moisture.
