Use with caution (alcohol can affect blood sugar control and increase hypoglycaemia risk with other antidiabetics)
Monograph
Voglibose 0.2 mg
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (as an add-on to diet and exercise) to control post‑meal (postprandial) blood glucose; may be used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines.
Voglibose is an alpha‑glucosidase inhibitor that delays breakdown and absorption of carbohydrates in the intestine. This reduces the rise in blood sugar after meals and helps improve overall glycaemic control.
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, typically just before the first bite of each main meal (or with the first mouthful). If you skip a meal, skip that dose. Follow diet and exercise advice; do not crush unless advised.
Flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, abdominal bloating, nausea
Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Use with caution in severe kidney or liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease/intestinal obstruction, or chronic intestinal disorders. Risk of hypoglycaemia increases when used with insulin or sulfonylureas—carry glucose; sucrose (table sugar) may be less effective for treating low sugar while on this medicine. Stop and seek medical help if severe abdominal symptoms or signs of liver injury occur.
Insulin, sulfonylureas (e.g., glimepiride/gliclazide) or other antidiabetics (increased hypoglycaemia risk), intestinal adsorbents/digestive enzyme preparations (may reduce effect), laxatives (may increase GI effects)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
