Monograph
Erythromycin 500 mg (as erythromycin base) tablet
Bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms such as respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis/tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia), skin and soft tissue infections, ear infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections (e.g., chlamydial infections) as prescribed by the doctor; also used in penicillin-allergic patients for some infections.
Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This stops bacterial growth (mainly bacteriostatic) and helps clear the infection.
Take as prescribed by the physician. Usually taken orally with water; best taken on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after food) unless stomach upset occurs, in which case take with food. Complete the full course; do not skip doses.
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain/cramps, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, rash
Use only for bacterial infections. Inform doctor if you have liver disease, history of jaundice with erythromycin, myasthenia gravis, heart rhythm problems/QT prolongation, low potassium/magnesium, or severe diarrhoea. Stop and seek care if allergic reaction, severe skin rash, or persistent/watery/bloody diarrhoea occurs (risk of C. difficile). May cause liver enzyme elevation or cholestatic hepatitis (rare).
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (↑bleeding risk), theophylline (↑levels), carbamazepine (↑levels), digoxin (↑levels), ciclosporin/tacrolimus (↑levels), statins such as simvastatin/lovastatin (↑myopathy risk), ergot derivatives (avoid), QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, certain antipsychotics/fluoroquinolones) (↑arrhythmia risk), rifampicin (↓erythromycin levels), oral contraceptives (possible reduced efficacy if vomiting/diarrhoea occurs)
