Monograph
Tablet
Bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia), ear infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, dental infections, and other infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes, helping prevent resistance and broadening amoxicillin’s activity. Lactic acid bacillus helps restore normal gut flora and may reduce antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.
Tablet: take exactly as prescribed by a doctor, preferably at the start of a meal/with food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow whole with water and complete the full course even if you feel better. Do not skip doses.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, rash, headache, vaginal thrush, taste changes
Prescription-only antibiotic. Do not use if allergic to penicillins/cephalosporins or if you previously had jaundice/liver problems with amoxicillin-clavulanate. Use with caution in liver disease, kidney impairment (dose adjustment may be needed), infectious mononucleosis (risk of rash), history of antibiotic-associated colitis. Seek urgent help for severe allergy (swelling, breathing difficulty), severe skin reactions, persistent/watery/bloody diarrhoea, or yellowing of eyes/skin.
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (may increase bleeding risk/INR), methotrexate (increased toxicity), probenecid (increases amoxicillin levels), allopurinol (increased rash risk), mycophenolate mofetil (reduced exposure), oral contraceptives (possible reduced efficacy—use backup if diarrhoea/vomiting), tetracyclines (may reduce effect)
