Treatment of severe bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms such as septicemia, hospital-acquired/ventilator-associated pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, skin/soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections; also used with other drugs for drug-resistant tuberculosis as per specialist advice

Amikacin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S bacterial ribosomal subunit. It inhibits protein synthesis and causes misreading of mRNA, leading to bacterial cell death (bactericidal).

For intravenous or intramuscular use only, to be administered by a healthcare professional. Dose and duration depend on infection severity, body weight and kidney function; therapeutic drug monitoring may be needed. Maintain adequate hydration; do not self-inject.

Injection site pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, rash, fever, increased blood urea/creatinine (kidney impairment), hearing changes (tinnitus/hearing loss), vertigo, neuromuscular weakness

Prescription-only antibiotic. Risk of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity—higher with prolonged therapy, high doses, dehydration, elderly, and kidney disease; monitor renal function and hearing. May cause neuromuscular blockade/respiratory depression, especially in myasthenia gravis or with anesthetics. Use only for susceptible bacterial infections; not effective for viral infections. Dose adjustment required in renal impairment.

Other nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., vancomycin, amphotericin B, cisplatin, cyclosporine/tacrolimus), loop diuretics (furosemide, ethacrynic acid) increase ototoxicity risk, other aminoglycosides, neuromuscular blockers and anesthetics (enhanced blockade), polymyxins, cephalosporins (additive kidney risk), NSAIDs may worsen renal function

Store below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep in original pack; use immediately after opening/reconstitution as per label and discard unused portion.
