Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, otitis media, bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, dental infections, and certain bone/joint infections.
Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from enzymatic breakdown by resistant bacteria, thereby broadening its spectrum.
Oral tablet. Take as prescribed by the doctor, usually at the start of a meal to reduce stomach upset. Swallow with water; do not crush unless advised. Complete the full course even if you feel better.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, skin rash, headache, oral/vaginal candidiasis
Prescription-only antibiotic. Do not use in patients with allergy to penicillins/cephalosporins or history of severe hypersensitivity. Use with caution in liver disease; may cause cholestatic hepatitis (rare)—stop and seek medical help if jaundice/dark urine occurs. Adjust dose in renal impairment as advised by doctor. Can cause severe skin reactions (rare) and antibiotic-associated diarrhoea/C. difficile—seek care for persistent or bloody diarrhoea. May reduce effectiveness of oral typhoid vaccine; avoid close timing. Not for viral infections.
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (may increase INR), methotrexate (reduced clearance/toxicity risk), probenecid (increases amoxicillin levels), allopurinol (increased rash risk), oral contraceptives (possible reduced efficacy—use backup), mycophenolate mofetil (reduced active metabolite exposure), live oral typhoid vaccine (reduced response)
