Tablet
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as upper and lower respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis/tonsillitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia), skin and soft tissue infections, otitis media, and certain sexually transmitted infections (e.g., uncomplicated chlamydial urethritis/cervicitis) as prescribed.
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This stops growth and replication of susceptible bacteria, helping clear the infection.
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Usually taken once daily; may be taken with or without food (take with food if stomach upset occurs). Swallow tablet with water and complete the full prescribed course; do not skip doses.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, rash
Use only for bacterial infections (not for viral illnesses). Use with caution in liver disease and in patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction with prior macrolide use. May prolong QT interval—use caution/avoid in patients with known QT prolongation, arrhythmias, low potassium/magnesium, or when taking other QT-prolonging drugs. Severe allergic reactions and severe skin reactions (SJS/TEN) are rare but possible—seek urgent care if rash, facial swelling, breathing difficulty occurs. Diarrhea may indicate C. difficile infection; seek medical advice if severe/persistent. Not recommended for self-medication; follow clinician guidance.
Antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (separate dosing), warfarin and other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk/monitor INR), digoxin (increased levels), ciclosporin (increased levels), statins (rare myopathy risk), other QT-prolonging medicines (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, certain antipsychotics/fluoroquinolones), ergot derivatives (avoid)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
