Tablet
Treatment of bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia), ear infections (otitis media), skin and soft tissue infections; also used for certain sexually transmitted infections (e.g., uncomplicated chlamydial urethritis/cervicitis) as prescribed.
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This stops growth of susceptible bacteria and helps clear the infection.
Take orally as prescribed by the doctor, preferably at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food (take with food if stomach upset occurs). Swallow tablet whole with water. Complete the full course even if you feel better; do not skip doses.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, altered taste
Use only for bacterial infections (not viral colds/flu). Stop and seek medical help if signs of allergy occur (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty). Use with caution in liver disease; report yellowing of eyes/skin or dark urine. May cause QT prolongation/arrhythmias—use caution if you have heart rhythm disorders, low potassium/magnesium, or are taking QT-prolonging medicines. Diarrhea can occur; persistent/severe watery or bloody diarrhea may indicate C. difficile infection and needs medical attention. Use in pregnancy/breastfeeding only on medical advice.
Antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (reduce absorption; separate dosing), warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk; monitor INR), digoxin (increased levels/toxicity), ciclosporin (increased levels), statins (rare myopathy risk), other QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, certain antipsychotics/fluoroquinolones), ergot derivatives (avoid)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
