Use with caution (alcohol may worsen acidity/GERD symptoms)
Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of acid-related disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, erosive esophagitis, gastritis, gastric/duodenal ulcers; prevention of NSAID-induced ulcers; part of H. pylori eradication regimen (with antibiotics).
Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It irreversibly blocks the H+/K+ ATPase (proton pump) in stomach parietal cells, reducing gastric acid secretion and allowing ulcers/erosions to heal.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily 30–60 minutes before food (preferably before breakfast). Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew.
Headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, vomiting, dizziness, constipation
Use with caution in severe liver disease. Long-term use may increase risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium, bone fractures and Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea. May mask symptoms of gastric malignancy—seek medical advice for alarm features (unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, blood in stool/black stools, difficulty swallowing). Inform doctor if you have osteoporosis, low magnesium, or take long-term therapy.
Warfarin (monitor INR), methotrexate (high-dose; may increase levels), digoxin (risk increased with hypomagnesemia), drugs needing acidic pH for absorption (ketoconazole/itraconazole/posaconazole, erlotinib), atazanavir/nelfinavir (reduced levels; avoid), clopidogrel (possible reduced activation—clinical relevance lower than omeprazole but use caution)
