Tablet
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections (acute bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis), skin and soft tissue infections; used with other medicines for Helicobacter pylori eradication in peptic ulcer disease; certain mycobacterial infections as per specialist advice.
Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This stops bacterial growth and helps clear infection.
Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Usually taken orally with or without food (take with food if stomach upset occurs). Swallow tablet whole with water and complete the full course; do not skip doses or stop early.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, indigestion, altered/metallic taste, headache, dizziness, rash, increased liver enzymes
Use only for bacterial infections. Inform doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, heart rhythm problems/QT prolongation, low potassium/magnesium, or history of arrhythmia. Seek medical help for severe diarrhoea (possible C. difficile), jaundice/dark urine, severe allergic reaction, or palpitations/fainting. Dose adjustment may be needed in renal impairment. Avoid using with medicines that can cause serious rhythm disorders or are contraindicated with clarithromycin.
Can interact with: warfarin/acenocoumarol (increased bleeding risk), statins (simvastatin/lovastatin—risk of myopathy; caution with atorvastatin), colchicine (toxicity), digoxin (increased levels), carbamazepine/phenytoin (level changes), theophylline, benzodiazepines (e.g., midazolam/triazolam), calcium channel blockers (verapamil/diltiazem—hypotension), antiretrovirals, antifungals (azole), and other QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, certain antipsychotics/fluoroquinolones). Contraindicated with cisapride, pimozide, terfenadine/astemizole, ergot alkaloids.
