Used for inflammatory and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, severe allergies/asthma exacerbations, skin disorders (eczema/dermatitis), lupus, inflammatory bowel disease, and other conditions where corticosteroids are indicated.
How It Works
Methylprednisolone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and suppresses immune responses. It decreases the production of inflammatory chemicals and reduces swelling, redness, and allergic symptoms.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Usually taken once daily in the morning with food/milk to reduce stomach upset. Do not stop suddenly; dose is often tapered based on response. Swallow tablet with water.
Prescription-only steroid. Do not stop abruptly (risk of adrenal suppression). Increased susceptibility to infections; seek medical help for fever/sore throat. Long-term/high-dose use may cause osteoporosis, cataract/glaucoma, muscle weakness, stomach ulcer/bleeding, Cushingoid features, and growth suppression in children. Use caution in diabetes, hypertension, peptic ulcer disease, liver disease, osteoporosis, glaucoma, psychiatric illness, and TB/latent infections. Avoid live vaccines during high-dose therapy; consult doctor before immunizations. May need stress-dose steroids during surgery/serious illness.
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs (ulcer/bleeding risk), anticoagulants like warfarin (INR changes), antidiabetics/insulin (reduced effect), diuretics/amphotericin B (hypokalemia), rifampicin/phenytoin/carbamazepine (reduced steroid levels), ketoconazole/clarithromycin (increased steroid levels), cyclosporine (increased toxicity), live vaccines (risk of infection), ACE inhibitors/ARBs (electrolyte changes)
Storage Instructions
