Syrup
Bacterial infections susceptible to cefixime such as respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis/tonsillitis, bronchitis), urinary tract infections, otitis media and uncomplicated typhoid fever (as prescribed).
Cefixime (a third‑generation cephalosporin) inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin‑binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. It is effective against many Gram‑negative and some Gram‑positive bacteria.
Dry syrup: reconstitute with boiled and cooled water up to the mark, shake well; use the measuring cup/syringe. Give the dose as prescribed, usually once or twice daily; may be taken with or without food. Shake well before each dose and complete the full course.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, headache, dizziness, rash, itching, mild rise in liver enzymes
Use only for bacterial infections; do not use in viral illnesses. Use with caution in penicillin/cephalosporin allergy (risk of hypersensitivity), history of colitis/antibiotic‑associated diarrhoea, and kidney disease (dose adjustment may be needed). Stop and seek care if severe diarrhoea, blood in stools, swelling/shortness of breath, or severe rash occurs.
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (may increase bleeding risk/INR), probenecid (may increase cefixime levels), live typhoid vaccine (reduced effect), other nephrotoxic drugs (caution in renal impairment)
Store the dry powder in a cool, dry place away from light and moisture. After reconstitution, keep tightly closed; store as per label (commonly refrigerated 2–8°C or at room temperature below 25°C); do not freeze; use within the period mentioned on the pack (often 7–14 days).
