Gliclazide 80 mg + Metformin 500 mg (immediate-release)
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (when diet and exercise alone or single-drug therapy is inadequate); helps control high blood sugar in adults.
Gliclazide (a sulfonylurea) stimulates the pancreas to release insulin, thereby lowering blood glucose. Metformin (a biguanide) reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity and peripheral glucose uptake.
Oral tablet; take exactly as prescribed, usually with meals to reduce stomach upset. Do not skip meals; swallow whole with water. Dose is individualized based on blood sugar and kidney function; regular glucose monitoring is advised.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), weight gain
Risk of hypoglycaemia—more likely with missed meals, excess exercise, alcohol, or other antidiabetics; carry glucose source. Metformin may rarely cause lactic acidosis—risk increases with kidney impairment, dehydration, severe infection, heart/respiratory failure, or excess alcohol; stop and seek care if rapid breathing, severe weakness, or unusual sleepiness occurs. Avoid/use with caution in renal or hepatic impairment; kidney function should be checked before and during therapy. Temporarily stop metformin before iodinated contrast imaging or major surgery as advised by doctor. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Use caution while driving if prone to hypoglycaemia.
Alcohol, insulin/other antidiabetic medicines (e.g., sulfonylureas, DPP-4 inhibitors), beta-blockers (may mask hypoglycaemia), ACE inhibitors, diuretics, corticosteroids, thyroid hormones, rifampicin, fluoroquinolones, azole antifungals, cimetidine, iodinated contrast media
