Treatment of acute diarrhea; symptomatic treatment of chronic diarrhea (as advised by doctor); helps reduce stool frequency and urgency.

Loperamide is an antidiarrheal that acts on opioid receptors in the intestinal wall to reduce gut motility. This slows intestinal transit, allowing more water and electrolytes to be absorbed, making stools firmer and less frequent.

Oral tablet. For acute diarrhea, take as directed by a doctor/label; usually taken after loose stools. Swallow with water; may be taken with or without food. Maintain adequate fluids/ORS. Do not use for more than 48 hours for acute diarrhea unless advised by a doctor.

Constipation, nausea, abdominal cramps/pain, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, flatulence

Do not use in children below recommended age/weight without medical advice. Do not use if there is blood in stools, high fever, dysentery, acute ulcerative colitis, antibiotic-associated colitis (C. difficile), or bacterial enterocolitis (e.g., Salmonella/Shigella/Campylobacter). Stop and seek medical help if constipation, abdominal distension, severe abdominal pain, or no improvement within 48 hours. Use with caution in liver disease. Overdose/misuse can cause serious heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation, torsades) and CNS toxicity—do not exceed recommended dose. Ensure rehydration, especially in children and elderly.

CYP3A4/CYP2C8 inhibitors (e.g., clarithromycin/erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, gemfibrozil) may increase loperamide levels; P-gp inhibitors (e.g., quinidine, ritonavir) increase exposure; other QT-prolonging drugs may raise arrhythmia risk; CNS depressants may increase drowsiness.

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and direct light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
