Bronchospasm in asthma and COPD, acute exacerbations with wheezing (as adjunct therapy)
Etophylline and theophylline are methylxanthines that relax bronchial smooth muscle and improve airflow. They also stimulate respiratory drive and may reduce airway responsiveness.
Administer only by a healthcare professional. Given by slow IV injection/infusion as prescribed; monitor heart rate, blood pressure and symptoms. Dose adjustments may be needed in liver disease, elderly and smokers.
Nausea, vomiting, headache, tremor, palpitations, insomnia, restlessness
Narrow therapeutic index; overdose can cause serious arrhythmias and seizures. Caution in heart disease, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, epilepsy, liver impairment and peptic ulcer. Avoid rapid IV administration. Monitor for toxicity, especially with interacting drugs.
Macrolides (erythromycin), fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin), cimetidine (increase levels), phenytoin/carbamazepine/rifampicin (decrease levels), beta-agonists (additive cardiac effects), caffeine and other xanthines
