Uses & Benefits
Relief of bronchospasm in asthma and COPD (chronic bronchitis, emphysema); helps ease wheeze, chest tightness and shortness of breath.
How It Works
Etophylline and theophylline are methylxanthine bronchodilators. They relax bronchial smooth muscles and improve airflow, and also reduce airway responsiveness by inhibiting phosphodiesterase and antagonizing adenosine.
Directions for Use
Oral syrup. Take exactly as prescribed; measure with a dosing cup/spoon. Can be taken with food to reduce stomach upset; take at the same time each day and avoid exceeding the dose. Do not use for acute severe asthma attack unless advised by a doctor.
Use with caution in heart disease/arrhythmias, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, seizure disorder, peptic ulcer, liver or kidney impairment, and in elderly. Overdose can cause severe vomiting, fast/irregular heartbeat and seizures—seek urgent care. Avoid excess caffeine. Dose adjustments may be needed in smokers, fever/viral illness, and liver disease. Not recommended for self-medication in children; use only on medical advice.
Drug Interactions
Macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin/clarithromycin), fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin), cimetidine, fluvoxamine and other CYP inhibitors may increase levels/toxicity; rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine and smoking may decrease effect; beta-agonists and other stimulants/caffeine may increase palpitations; alcohol may increase side effects; lithium levels may decrease; may increase effects/levels of warfarin in some cases—monitor as advised.
