Tablet
Relief and prevention of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and COPD (wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness).
Etofylline and theophylline (xanthine bronchodilators) relax the airway smooth muscles and improve airflow. They inhibit phosphodiesterase and antagonize adenosine receptors, leading to bronchodilation and reduced airway resistance.
Take orally as advised by the doctor, usually after food with a glass of water. Swallow whole; do not crush/chew. Take at the same time each day and do not exceed the prescribed dose.
Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, headache, restlessness, tremor, insomnia, palpitations, fast heartbeat
Use with caution in heart disease/arrhythmias, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, peptic ulcer, epilepsy, liver or kidney impairment, and elderly patients. Overdose can cause serious toxicity (severe vomiting, seizures, dangerous arrhythmias); seek urgent help if suspected. Avoid excessive caffeine; stop smoking changes drug levels. Inform doctor if fever or acute illness occurs as dose adjustment may be needed.
Macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin/clarithromycin), fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin), cimetidine, oral contraceptives, fluvoxamine (increase levels/toxicity); rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, smoking (reduce levels); beta-blockers may reduce bronchodilation; other stimulants/caffeine increase side effects.
