Type 2 diabetes mellitus to help control blood glucose along with diet and exercise
Gliclazide is a sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells. It also helps improve peripheral glucose utilization, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.
Take as directed by doctor, usually once daily with breakfast or the first main meal. Swallow tablet whole; do not crush/chew (modified release). Regularly monitor blood glucose and do not skip meals.
Hypoglycaemia, dizziness, headache, nausea, stomach upset, weight gain, skin rash
Risk of low blood sugar especially with missed meals, heavy exercise, alcohol, or with other antidiabetics; carry glucose/sugar source. Use with caution in elderly, kidney or liver impairment, G6PD deficiency. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Inform doctor before surgery/acute illness as dose adjustments may be needed.
Other antidiabetics/insulin (increased hypoglycaemia), fluconazole (increases gliclazide effect), beta-blockers (mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), corticosteroids and thiazide diuretics (raise glucose), warfarin (may alter anticoagulant effect), alcohol (hypoglycaemia/flush risk)
