Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and heartburn, erosive esophagitis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, NSAID-induced ulcer prevention, Helicobacter pylori eradication (with antibiotics), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome/pathological hypersecretory conditions
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that irreversibly blocks the H+/K+ ATPase (proton pump) in gastric parietal cells. This reduces stomach acid production and allows ulcers/erosions in the esophagus and stomach to heal.
Tablet: take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily 30–60 minutes before food (preferably before breakfast). Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew. Duration depends on the condition; for H. pylori, use only with the prescribed antibiotics regimen.
Headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, vomiting, dizziness
Use with caution in severe liver disease. Long-term use may increase risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium, fractures (osteoporosis), and Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea. May rarely cause kidney inflammation (interstitial nephritis) or severe skin reactions; seek medical help if rash, reduced urination, or severe diarrhea occurs. PPIs can mask symptoms of gastric cancer—evaluate alarm features (weight loss, vomiting, bleeding, dysphagia).
Clopidogrel (reduced activation/effect), warfarin (INR changes), phenytoin, diazepam, digoxin (increased levels with hypomagnesemia), methotrexate (especially high dose), tacrolimus, ketoconazole/itraconazole/posaconazole (reduced absorption), atazanavir/nelfinavir (reduced levels—avoid), rifampicin and St John’s wort (reduced esomeprazole effect)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and direct light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
