Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn and acid regurgitation, erosive esophagitis, peptic/duodenal ulcer, prevention of NSAID-induced ulcers; part of H. pylori eradication regimen (with antibiotics) as prescribed.
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It irreversibly blocks the gastric H+/K+ ATPase (proton pump) in stomach parietal cells, reducing acid production and relieving acid-related symptoms while allowing ulcers/erosions to heal.
Tablet: take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily 30–60 minutes before food (preferably before breakfast). Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew. Duration depends on condition; complete the course.
Headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, constipation, dry mouth, dizziness
Use with caution in liver disease; inform doctor if you have alarm symptoms (unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, difficulty swallowing, blood in vomit/stools). Long-term use may increase risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium, fractures, and infections (e.g., C. difficile). May mask symptoms of gastric cancer—evaluate if symptoms persist/return. Not for immediate relief of acute heartburn.
Clopidogrel (reduced effect), warfarin (INR changes), phenytoin, diazepam, digoxin, methotrexate (high-dose), tacrolimus, atazanavir/nelfinavir (reduced levels; avoid), ketoconazole/itraconazole/iron salts (reduced absorption)
