Neuropathic pain (nerve pain) such as diabetic neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia; adjunct treatment of partial seizures (epilepsy) as prescribed by a doctor
Gabapentin is a GABA-analogue that binds to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system. This reduces release of excitatory neurotransmitters, helping relieve neuropathic pain and decrease seizure activity.
Tablet/capsule: Take exactly as prescribed, usually 1–3 times daily. Can be taken with or without food; swallow with water. Do not stop suddenly—dose should be tapered under medical advice.
Dizziness, drowsiness/somnolence, fatigue, ataxia/unsteadiness, peripheral edema, nausea, dry mouth, blurred vision, weight gain
May cause sleepiness and dizziness—avoid driving/operating machinery until you know the effect. Do not stop abruptly (risk of withdrawal symptoms/seizures); taper as advised. Use caution in kidney disease (dose adjustment needed). Monitor for mood changes/suicidal thoughts. Use with caution in elderly due to fall risk. Seek urgent care for severe rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, or unusual behavioral changes.
Alcohol and other CNS depressants (increased drowsiness), opioids (e.g., morphine; increased sedation/respiratory depression risk), antacids containing aluminum/magnesium (reduce absorption—separate by at least 2 hours), sedating antihistamines/benzodiazepines (additive sedation)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
