Type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve blood glucose control when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient
Glimepiride (a sulfonylurea) increases insulin release from the pancreas. Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity, helping the body use glucose better.
Take by mouth as prescribed, usually once daily with the main meal (preferably breakfast). Swallow tablet whole (do not crush/chew if modified release). Monitor blood sugar regularly and follow diet/exercise advice.
Nausea,diarrhoea,abdominal discomfort,loss of appetite,hypoglycaemia,dizziness,headache,weight gain
Risk of hypoglycaemia (especially with missed meals, alcohol, heavy exercise, or other antidiabetics); metformin may rarely cause lactic acidosis—risk higher in kidney/liver disease, dehydration, severe infection, heart/respiratory failure. Avoid in severe renal impairment; check kidney function before and during therapy. Temporarily stop metformin before/after iodinated contrast or major surgery as advised. Use caution in elderly and in G6PD deficiency. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Alcohol (increases risk of hypoglycaemia/lactic acidosis),insulin or other antidiabetics (increased hypoglycaemia),beta-blockers (mask hypoglycaemia),corticosteroids/thiazide diuretics (raise glucose),ACE inhibitors (may increase hypoglycaemia),fluoroquinolones (glucose disturbances),rifampicin (reduces effect),cimetidine (increases metformin levels),iodinated contrast media (renal risk/lactic acidosis)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
