Tablet
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent diabetes) to help control blood sugar in adults, along with diet and exercise; may be used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines as prescribed.
Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea that stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin. It also helps the body use insulin more effectively, thereby lowering blood glucose levels.
Take orally exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with breakfast or the first main meal. Swallow the tablet with water; do not skip meals after taking it. Dose is individualized based on blood sugar; do not stop or change dose without medical advice.
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), dizziness, headache, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, weight gain, skin rash
Can cause hypoglycaemia—risk increases with missed meals, excess exercise, alcohol, or with certain medicines. Use with caution in elderly, malnourished patients, and in kidney or liver impairment; dose adjustment/close monitoring may be needed. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Seek urgent care for severe hypoglycaemia (confusion, fainting) or allergic reactions. Monitor blood glucose and HbA1c regularly.
Alcohol (increases risk of hypoglycaemia), insulin or other antidiabetics (additive hypoglycaemia), beta-blockers (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), corticosteroids/thyroid hormones/diuretics (may raise blood sugar), azole antifungals (e.g., fluconazole), macrolide antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin), sulfonamides, warfarin (may alter effect), ACE inhibitors (may increase hypoglycaemia risk)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.
