Relief of constipation (as rectal suppository/enema), Dryness and irritation of skin (as topical emollient/humectant), Dry mouth (as oral topical preparations)
Glycerin is an osmotic agent that draws water into the bowel, softening stool and stimulating bowel movement when used rectally. On skin and mucosa, it acts as a humectant, attracting and retaining moisture to reduce dryness and irritation.
For constipation: use rectally as directed on the label/by doctor; usually works within minutes to hours. For skin dryness: apply a thin layer to the affected area 1-3 times daily or as needed; avoid eyes and broken skin unless advised. Use with or without food as applicable to dosage form.
Rectal irritation, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, burning sensation, skin irritation, redness, itching
For rectal use, do not use for more than 1 week unless advised; consult a doctor if severe abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, rectal bleeding, or no bowel movement occurs after use. Avoid use in intestinal obstruction, acute abdomen, or severe dehydration. For topical use, discontinue if significant irritation/allergy occurs; avoid contact with eyes.
No clinically significant interactions expected with topical use; rectal use may reduce absorption of other rectally administered medicines if used close together (separate administration times).
Store at room temperature (below 25-30°C), tightly closed, protected from excessive heat and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Lactulose solution, Polyethylene glycol (PEG 3350) powder, Bisacodyl tablet/suppository, Sodium picosulfate drops/tablet, Liquid paraffin
