Type 2 diabetes mellitus (to help control blood sugar) when diet and exercise alone are insufficient; may be used when dual therapy with metformin and a sulfonylurea is appropriate.
This is typically a combination anti-diabetic product. Metformin (if present) reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity. A sulfonylurea (if present) increases insulin release from the pancreas, helping lower blood glucose.
Take as prescribed by your doctor. Tablets are usually taken with food to reduce stomach upset and to lower the risk of low blood sugar; take at the same time(s) each day. Do not skip meals; monitor blood glucose regularly.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dizziness, headache, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), weight gain, metallic taste
Risk of hypoglycaemia (especially if meals are missed, with alcohol, or with other anti-diabetics); monitor blood glucose. Use with caution in kidney or liver disease; metformin-containing products can rarely cause lactic acidosis—seek urgent care for severe weakness, muscle pain, breathing difficulty, or unusual sleepiness. Inform doctor before surgery/contrast imaging; may need temporary stoppage. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Elderly may need dose adjustment and closer monitoring.
Alcohol (increases risk of hypoglycaemia and lactic acidosis with metformin), insulin/other antidiabetics (additive hypoglycaemia), corticosteroids and thiazide diuretics (may increase glucose), beta-blockers (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), ACE inhibitors (may enhance glucose-lowering), cimetidine (may raise metformin levels), iodinated contrast media (kidney risk; may require holding metformin)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
