Treatment and prevention of vitamin D deficiency, rickets and osteomalacia, supportive therapy in osteoporosis, supplementation in infants/children/adults with low vitamin D levels
Cholecalciferol is converted in the body to active vitamin D, which increases intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. This helps maintain normal bone mineralization and supports muscle function.
Oral drops: use the calibrated dropper as directed by the physician. Can be taken with or after food; in infants, drops may be mixed with a small amount of milk/water and given immediately. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, headache, weakness, increased thirst, increased urination
Do not use excessive doses—risk of hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcaemia. Use with caution in kidney disease, history of kidney stones, hyperparathyroidism, sarcoidosis or other granulomatous diseases. Monitor serum calcium/vitamin D levels if using high doses or long-term. Seek medical advice if symptoms of high calcium occur (persistent nausea, vomiting, confusion, excessive thirst/urination).
Thiazide diuretics (increased risk of hypercalcaemia), digoxin/cardiac glycosides (arrhythmia risk with high calcium), antiepileptics like phenytoin/carbamazepine and rifampicin (reduced vitamin D effect), corticosteroids (reduced vitamin D action), cholestyramine/orlistat/mineral oil (reduced absorption), aluminium/magnesium antacids in renal impairment (risk of toxicity)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
